Weekly Review - Coffee

It’s another Monday… That means, another week to conquer and do something meaningful.  That meaningful part is up to you.  If you need some inspiration or are taking a quick break, here are some links that might help.

  1. 10 Ways to Secure Your Data When Working Remotely [Article] – #1 is the most interesting to me.  I already have something installed but another layer of security and redundancy might be a wise decision.
  2. The thumbnails are always changing on Netflix because you’re being tested [Article] – Of course, Netflix is datamining the crap out of us!
  3. This is the worst Wi-Fi hotspot name any passenger could use on a plane [Article] – I use witty names for my hotspots and routers, but this is just a bad idea…
  4. Save your drone from an expensive fall with this mini parachute [Article] – Yes!  This is much better than those silly floaty things that I posted about last week.  A parachute is much more practical.

Google, You Tricked Me!

Google, You Tricked Me

I’ve been a Gmail user since 2005 (that’s the oldest email I could find) and have had a very pleasant experience thus far.  Keep in mind, this is the free Gmail service.  As I became more web savvy, learned some new skills, and started building websites, I needed email addresses for those domains.  Enter, Google Apps (now Google Apps for Work).

Back in the day, Google allowed you to add domain names and email accounts to your Google Apps account.  In turn, this allowed you to create email addresses for your domain names (for FREE!).  This was a fantastic service for folks wanting an email address for their domains and for small businesses.  I’m assuming Google finally did the math to figure out how much money they were missing out on.  This is when Google Apps for Work was created (I’m assuming).

Since the transition from the Free Edition to Google Apps for Work, Google allows you to keep any domains and email accounts.  However, if you go to add a new domain, you can’t! There was a work around to adding a domain and it could easily be done by trying out Google Apps for Work for 30 days.  Within that 30 day window, you could add a domain and downgrade your account.  This little hack was useful and was even recommended by Google support!

So, what did I do?  As I purchased a few more domain names for side projects, I created email addresses with the above method:  Upgrade my account to Google Apps for Work, added the domain names, created email accounts, and tried to downgrade.  Yes, tried to downgrade!  They fixed this loophole…

Once again, Google caught on and this little hack no longer works.  I had to remove the email accounts and domain names before I could downgrade.  Total time wasted: a few hours.

Long story short, if you’re building a website and you’re looking for a free email alternative, Zoho has been treating me well.  They offer a free solution that supports one domain for 25 users.  Not bad at all!

Weekly Review - Coffee

Last weekend, the m2m4deano Minnesota bike ride was a success!  This weekend was also a great weekend for biking here in Colorado.  Here are some things that you may have missed if you were out and about.

  • How To Cancel A Message From Being Sent On iPhone [Article] – I wish there was a cancel feature.  The same for Outlook too!  Regardless, here’s roundabout way of doing in on your iOS device.
  • 100+ Flight Attendant Funny Announcements [Article] – There are some good doozies in here.  Unfortunately, I haven’t heard any of these yet.
  • 9 Things I Learned While Driving Across the United States [Article] – It just might be time for a road trip to do some exploring!
  • 7 Tips for Minding Your Manners During Conference Calls [Article] – The mute button is always my friend!  When will Apple add the mute button to the headset controls!?

In other news, Casey Neistat’s YouTube channel has just blown me away.  In all honesty, I don’t know how, but I’ve managed to catch up on all of his videos.  There are some great quotes, inspiration, and work ethic that we should all try to aspire to.

Shea Laughlin - Coffee Break

Oh yeah!  Another Monday!  Ok, maybe you’re not as excited and need to ease into it.  Here are some links that I found interesting last week.

  • 15 Secretly Hidden Features of Mac You Probably Won’t Know If You Miss This [Article] – Hot Corners is by far my favorite and most useful feature on the list.  However, creating a signature, is also very useful when you need to send a “fax” or sign a document electronically.
  • 11 Fatal Flaws of the Newly Location Independent [Article] –  A little lengthy but some good suggestions.  Just remember, you’re “here/there” to create a business, not go on vacation!
  • Head to McDonald’s at 10:35 am for a Special Burger-and-Egg Sandwich [Article] – I’m not sure if I should be disgusted or if I want to try it.
  • List Building Or Launching, Which Comes First? [Article] – A list is a list and better than nothing.  I should take this advice and launch!
