Disclaimer: I drafted this post on August 6, 2013 and came across it while looking through Evernote. Even though this is over two years old, it’s still applicable today and probably more so in the future.
Today at work (August 6, 2013), I walked by someone that I follow on Twitter and they follow me back. I knew who this person was but they had no clue who I was (based upon that person looking at me and then looking away). This world is huge yet social media can flatten it.
I’m now very curious. How many people do I follow on Twitter or insert your social media platform of choice that I actually know in real life?
How many friends on Facebook have I met IRL (in real life)? LinkedIn? Twitter? Instagram? Etc…
To answer my own question, I’ll venture a guess. I would estimate that I know about:
- 97% of my Facebook friends (400/410)
- 60% of my LinkedIn connections (650/1082)
- 30% of my Instagram connections that I’m following (40/132)
- 10% of my Twitter connections that I’m following (100/1016)
About a year ago, I saw a blog post about a gentleman, Matt Kulesza, that’s making it his mission to meet all of his Facebook friends and have a cup of coffee with them. What a neat project and goal. You can follow Matt’s journey on his Facebook Page or on Tumblr.
How many of your connections do you know?
