Yesterday was a sad day… I returned my very first Apple product, ever!
When we moved to Denver we decided to leave (sell) out Roku2 and get an Apple TV. We bought the Apple TV, installed it, and was immediately let down by the user interface. It was the clunkiest Apple product – the very first version of iOS I used was better! If you’re wondering, the first iOS interface I used was on an iPhone 3G.
Here’s what I didn’t like about the Apple TV
- IR Receiver – which means the device needs to be visible for the remote to work.
- No support for Amazon streaming. This was almost deal breaker at first but I was OK without having Amazon.
- The interface was not as streamlined as it could be (comparing it to Roku). The user needs to navigate multiple menus and sub menus to see items on Netflix. Whereas, Roku shows this all to you on one screen.
- When you finished watching an episode of something on Netflix, you need to go back to the main episode menu to choose the next episode. Too many clicks! Just let me play the next episode…
The one item that I really wanted an Apple TV for was Air Play! With the various Apple devices in our household, this was a much desired feature. However, this feature would not be used enough to warrant the continual pain of the poor UI on the Apple TV.
Once we get the new Roku3, I’ll post a review of that as well!
